Vocavoy helps you learn a language with short daily lessons. We collect as little as we can,
never sell your data, and never show you third-party ads.
No account, no sign-up
Vocavoy does not ask for an email, phone number or password. It can ask for a first name to greet you by,
which you can leave blank. The app creates a random identifier on your
device (stored in your iCloud Keychain so your progress survives reinstalling) and uses it to keep your
progress. We cannot link this identifier to you as a person.
What we store
- Your learning progress: course language, level, daily goal, lessons completed, vocabulary
review schedule, XP, coins, streak, quests and weekly race standings.
- Your onboarding answers: why you are learning and how you heard about Vocavoy.
- What you tell us about yourself (all optional): the first name you want Vocavoy to call you,
your gender (used only so lessons and the tutor use the right grammatical forms, like
cansado or cansada) and your age range. If you give a name, it is shown to other learners in your weekly race group;
you can change or remove it any time in the app. Your gender and age range are never shown.
- Your race profile: a nickname (randomly generated, for example “Swift Otter”, or one you choose)
and an emoji avatar you pick, shown to other learners in your weekly race group.
- Accent practice results: the text your iPhone transcribed from your speech and your score.
Your voice recording never leaves your device: speech is turned into text on your iPhone by
Apple’s speech recognition, and only that text is sent to us.
- Tutor chats: messages you send to the AI tutor are sent to our AI provider to generate a
reply and are not stored by us.
- Reports: if you report or block another learner, or report an AI reply, we keep the report (who reported,
the name or message reported and why) to review it, and remember who you blocked so they stay hidden for you.
- Notification token and time zone, so we can send the daily reminder you chose.
- App analytics and crash reports: which screens are used and whether the app crashed, tied only to
your random identifier, to improve the app.
- Session recordings: to find confusing screens and bugs, we record how the app is used — screen
images and taps inside Vocavoy, including what’s shown on screen (such as your first name or messages you
type to Croco). Recordings are tied only to your random identifier, are never sold or used for ads,
and are deleted automatically after 30 days. Nothing outside the Vocavoy app is recorded.
Who processes it
- Google Firebase / Cloud Firestore (database, United States)
- Amazon Web Services: Bedrock (AI tutor and lesson generation) and Polly (native-speaker audio)
- Apple Push Notification service (reminders)
- PostHog (product analytics) and Sentry (crash reporting)
These providers process data only to provide their service to us.
Your choices
- Delete everything: Settings → Delete account permanently removes all of your data from our servers.
- Reminders: turn them off in Settings or in iOS Settings at any time.
- Microphone and speech recognition are only used when you tap the microphone, and can be turned off in iOS Settings.
Children
Vocavoy is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
